Air Fryer Avocado Crisps | Healthy Kid-Friendly Back-to-School Snack
The mornings will soon be getting busier, backpacks will need packing, and the back-to-school routine is just around the corner. Between preparing lunches, planning homework schedules, and juggling after-school activities, keeping kids nourished can feel like a balancing act. That’s where the humble avocado comes in—creamy, versatile, and packed with hidden nutrition to help little brains and bodies stay fuelled for the school year ahead.
Children’s nutrition expert Lucy Upton highlights just how versatile avocados can be: packed with healthy monounsaturated fats for brain power and focus, fibre for digestion, and vitamins like E and folate to keep little bodies thriving. “You can easily sneak avocado into breakfast or lunch,” she says. “Spread it on whole-grain toast, blend it into smoothies, mash it into wraps or sandwiches, dice it into salads or sushi, or whip up a quick guacamole for dipping veggies and crackers.”
Avocados are nature’s ready-made brain food. They support brain cell structure and memory, contain lutein for eye health, provide fibre, potassium, and slow-release fats to help avoid sugar crashes, keep children satisfied longer, and deliver vitamins and antioxidants to support immunity. This combination of nutrients makes avocado a true back-to-school ally.
Lucy Upton adds, “Avocados contain healthy monounsaturated fats to support brain health, focus, and slow-release energy, alongside fibre for digestion and multiple vitamins and minerals, including vitamin E and folate. You can easily incorporate avocado into meals to fuel the school day.”
The goodness of an avocado doesn’t stop once the last bite is gone. Its smooth, glossy pit can become a mini project for curious hands: sprout it in water, paint it into tiny characters, or gently practice juggling. It’s a playful, planet-friendly way to turn kitchen scraps into creativity, learning, and a few quiet moments for parents.

Ingredients:
1 large avocado or 2 small ones
80g grated Parmesan cheese
15g breadcrumbs
1 tsp crushed garlic
1 tsp crushed onion
Salt and black pepper
Instructions:
Mix the cheese, breadcrumbs, garlic, onion, salt, and pepper.
Cut the avocado(s) in half, remove pits and skins, and mash.
Stir in the breadcrumb mixture until combined.
Spread fine slices onto baking paper, sprinkle with extra breadcrumbs, and place in the air fryer basket.
Cook for 6–8 minutes at 160°C, flip, then cook another 6–8 minutes.
Repeat until all the mixture is used.
Let crisps cool before serving.
Keep slices bite-sized for little hands. Let kids mash or stir to get them involved. Serve on a colourful plate or snack platter to make it visually fun and inviting.
Best enjoyed fresh, but store in an airtight container for up to 2 days. Re-crisp in the air fryer for a few minutes before serving to bring back the crunch.
Add a pinch of smoked paprika or chilli flakes for a flavour twist. Swap Parmesan for a vegan cheese alternative. Serve with a side of vegetables or a dip to turn it into a mini snack platter.
Will my kids taste the avocado? Not distinctly as the cheese and crunch take centre stage
Can I make them for parties? Absolutely, they’re bite-sized, fun, and crowd-pleasing.
Can I make them ahead? Yes, just re-crisp before serving to bring back the crunch.
From mid-mornings to lunch, after-school snacks to weekend treats, these Air Fryer Avocado Crisps are an easy, tasty, and nutritious way to sneak more avocado into your kids’ day—without sacrificing fun, flavour, or crunch.
