If you've recently attempted to prepare a roast, and your result was a bit less decadent than you hoped it would be, no doubt you've learned that roasting meat is not nearly as simple as most of us naturally assume it will be. It's pretty easy to overcook meats that end up dry, chewy, and flavourless, while undercooking meats is just as easy, although undercooked roast meat is more of a health concern than a flavour disappointment. With these expert tips, you can prepare the perfect roast every time.

Meat Must Be Room Temperature Before Roasting

Suppose you're hoping to prepare succulent beef roasting joints for a family dinner party. If you start roasting the beef joints from frozen, you will likely burn the meat on the outside. It will probably also be raw on the inside. The same is true when roasting any meat. You should always ensure your chosen meat is brought to room temperature before you pop it in the oven for roasting. It is also always best to defrost meats in cold water in its sealed packaging when frozen, as defrosting meats in the microwave alters the taste as it will cook the meat slightly. Alternatively, purchasing fresh meat to roast is another option.

Calibrate Your Oven

Most ovens have temperature settings and a few others, although not all ovens are calibrated correctly. Instead of blindly trusting your oven, you should invest in an oven thermometer. Place the thermometer in the oven and set it to a suitable temperature. When the oven claims to be heated to your chosen setting, check the thermometer to confirm the inner heat. If you find that your oven is not calibrated, you will need to call out a professional. Although in the meantime, you can make use of your oven thermometer to ensure meats are always roasted at the correct temperature.

Use Roasting Tools And Turn Your Meat

If your oven has a timer, you should use it to know when to turn your meat as you will need to do this at least once. What's more, you will also need to use the correct roasting tools such as the proper dish or pan as well as tin foil in some cases to protect your food from direct heat and slow down the cooking process. Using tin foil or a cover will result in evenly cooked meat.

Know Your Meat And The Cuts

Roasting a whole chicken requires a different process than chicken pieces. The same is true for all meats and their unique cuts. Instead of using the same roasting process for cooking any meat, you should know what meat and the specific meat cut to find the correct temperature, roasting time, and roasting tools to use. Knowing your different roasting meats will also help you use the right herbs and spices to create the perfect flavourful roast you are after.

Roasting is not the most challenging method of cooking meat, although there are a few steps in the process that anyone can easily overlook. So be sure to carefully follow recipes step by step and consider the above expert tips every time you prepare a roast.
